Track improvements have begun starting with the resurfacing of Devils Elbow!
Lydden Hills circuit which was originally reformed from a grass track to tarmac circuit in 1962 by Bill Chesson and later resurfaced in 1993 has now undergone the first stage of the planned investments at Lydden Hill. Improvements started with Devil's elbow which was resurfaced last week by the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business, Tarmac, a CRH company.
Over the last 55 years the tarmac circuit has been graced by many star drivers and riders such as John Button (2009 F1 Champion Jenson Button’s father), Martin Schanche, Damon Hill, Will Gollop, Shakey Byrne, Steve Parish, Petter Solberg, Sebastian Loeb and more. During its lifetime the canterbury circuit has played its part in history by being the birthplace to the sport of Rallycross in 1967 as well as playing host to many large and historic events including the Lord of Lydden, FIA World Rallycross, Truck Festival and the BHP show to name a few.
Prospective investment plans by current circuit owner, Pat Doran, seek a fully resurfaced circuit alongside contemporary offices, hospitality centre, scrutineering bay and garages. Management at Lydden hope improvements will see the return of many clubs to continue to host a range of exciting events for the local community as well as the national and international visitors to enjoy for the indefinite future.
The action packed summer at Lydden Hill continues with the Vintage Bike racing this weekend (19th/20th August) presented by the Vintage Motorcyle Club followed by the Toyo Tires MSA British Rallycross championship round 6 on the bank holiday Monday (28th August). Later in the year the circuit will host Motor Mania (4th November) which will feature an afternoon of on track action finishing with an evening firework display.
